  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 ½ teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic (for sauce, minced)
  • 2 tablespoons cucumber (for sauce, grated)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for sauce)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (for sauce)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper (for sauce)
  • ⅛ teaspoon red pepper flakes (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, and spices to create the marinade.
  2. Place chicken thighs in a ziplock bag with the marinade; seal and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Slice onions and layer them at the bottom of the slow cooker.
  4. Add marinated chicken on top of onions; cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 4-6 hours until tender.
  5. Shred the chicken with forks and return it to the slow cooker to soak up juices.
  6. Prepare the yogurt sauce by mixing yogurt with garlic, cucumber, cumin, lemon juice, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  7. Serve shredded chicken in warm pitas topped with yogurt sauce and fresh vegetables.
